Abstract

Trying anything new comes with the risk of failing. Studies have indicated that students and employees are becoming more afraid of failing and hence are reluctant to take risks. Yet, most learning necessitates risk-taking and learning from mistakes. Productive failure, the learning from our mistakes, can be a pedagogical tool where students learn independently how to be successful at a new or challenging task. The key is intentionally creating a bridge from the known to the unknown as well as intentionally creating opportunities for perseverance.
