Abstract

How do we know how students perceive their learning in our courses? Teaching Performance Evaluations come too late and provide insufficient information to help plan instruction to fit students' needs. The SENCER Student Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG) is a self-report assessment instrument that asks students to rate the extent to which specific activities in their science courses aid their learning. It allows its users to adapt the assessment items to specific learning outcomes and content of a course. This tool will support and complement the upcoming general education program assessment and provide direct information on student involvement, fostering creativity and lifelong (habitual) learning.
