Abstract

For this table session, I propose sharing my experiences using Twitter as a pedagogical tool. I will discuss both formal (i.e. required) and informal (i.e. encouraged) use of Twitter, as well in-class and out-of-class use. I will highlight several specific assignments and broader learning goals that Twitter can facilitate. These outcomes include eliciting spontaneous archivable feedback, fostering dialogue beyond the confines of the classroom, creating a space for low-stakes exploratory writing, and simply challenging students to think about technology in new ways. In addition to the advantages of using social media with students, I will address some of the drawbacks, including privacy concerns and the possible resistance from students and colleagues alike for treating what some perceive as a frivolous distraction as a serious tool for teaching and learning.
