Vol. 17 No. 3: Fall 2020

Vol. 17, no. 3 (Fall 2020) features the Forum “Southeast Asia in World History: Art, Ethnicity, Gender, Identity, Modernity, and Trade,” which positions the region as a dynamic center of exchange rather than a peripheral extension of larger Asian or colonial narratives. Its essays address maritime history, Islam and modernity, female Muslim rule, Chinese borderland polities, migration and economic change in Borneo, Bengali connections during the Melaka era, Vietnamese Francophone literature, and digital resources for teaching and research. Together, the Forum highlights borrowing and adaptation, religious and cultural diffusion, migration, and trade as essential frameworks for connecting Southeast Asian histories to world history.
