Abstract

This presentation will discuss pedagogical approaches that draw on what students bring to the learning community as active participants of their own learning. This pedagogy draws inspiration from Paolo Freire, who critiques the dominant banking model of education by emphasizing that "men and women develop their power to perceive critically the way they exist in the world."à The presentation will include examples from on- and off-campus learning environments to demonstrate how Freire's pedagogy can be liberating and empowering for all participants, including the teacher-facilitator.
