Abstract

In March 2012, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its estimate of autism prevalence in the US to 1 in 88 children. The population growth of students with Aspergerââ¬â¢s Syndrome and other Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) enrolled in post-secondary programs presents significant challenges for colleges and universities as they work to provide quality education, support, and services. At Mason, the Office of Disability Services has seen a 520% increase from 2010 to 2011 of students on the Spectrum. This session will focus on the unique features of the learner with ASD, increase understanding of the function of behaviors for students on the Spectrum, share instructional strategies specific to this diverse population, and offer support for collaborating to help them be successful in the higher education environment.
