  • 2017-2018 Call for Submissions

    2017-10-19

For the fifth consecutive year, the Journal of Mason Graduate Research (JMGR) is offering all graduate and professional students at George Mason University the opportunity to publish their work in an interdisciplinary, open-access venue. Please register and submit your work to journals.gmu.edu/jmgr. While submissions are welcome year-round, special priority for this yearââ¬â¢s volume will be given to manuscripts received by January 31, 2018.

This journal is open to all graduate and professional students at George Mason University, regardless of study area. JMGR provides GMU and the broader academic community a quality, peer-reviewed, open access journal of graduate and professional student research. Manuscripts are published using the Open Journal System (OJS) hosted by Mason Publishing Group. Authors publish through JGMR at no cost. JMGR publishes online issues each academic year, and submissions are welcome on a rolling basis.

Academic publishing is important to your success in graduate school. Publishing benefits you by:

    1. increasing the quality of your research through multiple peer reviews,
    2. preparing your thesis or dissertation for academic defense,
    3. attracting public recognition to your intellectual contributions in your field,
    4. allowing others to build on your work, and
    5. advancing your career goals (publish donââ¬â¢t perish!).

JMGR seeks to provide all Mason graduate and professional students opportunities to be exposed to the peer review and publication process while providing opportunities for Mason faculty to perform service to the university through academic contributions and mentorships. Students retain eligibility to publish up to 6 months after graduation. In addition to thesis and dissertation material, students should consider submitting research conducted for term papers or other classwork.

    Author & Submission Guidelines

The Journal of Mason Graduate research is a refereed journal.à Its editorial staff relies on the advice of an editorial board composed of Mason graduate students. The staff reviews all submissions and assigns those that meet style and topic guidelines to at least two reviewers for evaluation. Reviewers include members of the editorial board and other graduate students who have a background in the topic addressed by the submission.

The Journal accepts manuscripts of 4000-7000 words, book reviews of 1500 words, and art submissions of original work.à Below are guidelines of each submission type and a review of the submission process including all required documents.

    Manuscript Guidelines

Please submit manuscripts to the journals electronic submission site:àManuscript must be 4000-7000 words, with 12-point Times New Roman text, double spaced (including references, footnotes, and endnotes).àà Manuscripts should be formatted using theàPublication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th editionà(APA), theàChicago Manual of Style, 15th editionà(CMS), or theàMLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition. All author information must be removed from the manuscript submission.à

Sections in a manuscript may include the following (in this order): (1) Title page, (2) Abstract, (3) Text (with tables and figures), (4) Notes, (5) References, and (6) Appendices.

1)ààà Title page contains a complete title of the manuscript, without author information

2)ààà Abstracts of 150 words and up to 6 keywords can be placed on the title page

3)ààà Manuscript text should be double spaced, between 4000-7000 words

5)ààà References must be formatted according to one of three styles above with complete information

6)ààà Appendices must be correctly labeled and must be central for the readability of the manuscript

Articles must be written in English. Use a clear readable style, avoiding jargon. If technical terms or acronyms must be used, define them when first used. Use non-racist, non-sexist language. Authors should refrain from using language that is demeaning to a persons' age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language or socioeconomic status. Furthermore, authors are required to adhere to George Mason Universityââ¬â¢s Code of Student Ethics. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in an automatic rejection.

    à

Authors must be current Mason graduate students at the time of submission.à Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions from copyright holders for reproduction of any illustrations, tables, or lengthy quotations previously published elsewhere. Any information included that does not adhere to this policy will be submitted to the appropriate office (Office of Academic Integrity and/or Provostââ¬â¢s Office) as an accusation of plagiarism and/or copyright infringement.

    Book Review Guidelines

Please submit book reviews to the journals electronic submission site:àBook reviews must be 1500 words, with 12-point Times New Roman text, double spaced (including references, footnotes, and endnotes).àà Book reviews should be formatted using theàPublication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th editionà(APA), theàChicago Manual of Style, 15th editionà(CMS), or theàMLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition. Submission Process

The review process for manuscripts is anonymous and blind-review. Therefore, authors should remove all material that is considered identifying information except for a cover page (as described below). As such, authors should not refer to themselves or any of their published work with identifying information. If an author cites himself, please use the name ââ¬ÅAuthorââ¬Â and publication date (Author, 2013). For co-authored publications, place ââ¬ÅAuthorââ¬Â in place where your name would appear in the citation.

To submit an article for review, you will first need toàregister an account.

When completing the registration form, be sure to note that you are an Author.à Once registered, under your user home page, you can click ââ¬ÅNew Submissionââ¬Â and follow the five-step process to post your article for review. The site will notify you once the submission is in the queue and you can track its process through the site. Please email Eric ââ¬ÅSiggyââ¬Â Scott (escott8@gmu.edu) if you have any questions about the log in or registration process.

    à

Submitted articles are forwarded to a review committee composed of graduate students and mentoring faculty members. Each article will be reviewed by an editor and then by two peer reviewers. All reviews are conducted blindly, therefore for the purposes of blind refereeing, full name of each author with current affiliation and full address/phone/email details plus short biographical note should be supplied on a separate cover sheet. Following the review, you will receive scores approximately three weeks after submission:

    1. Accept ââ¬âWill be published with no additional modification needed except minor grammatical and syntax errors.
    2. Revisions Required ââ¬â Publication meets some major requirements but revisions are needed. Once resubmitted, the manuscript will be brought straight to the Editorial Board for approval or rejection.
    3. Reject ââ¬â Manuscript does not meet major requirements and will not have the opportunity to resubmit.

By submitting a manuscript, you agree that:

    • You are a current Mason graduate student.
    • You have properly attributed all sources.
    • JMGR has the priority/exclusive right to first publication.
    • JMGR and the author will retain a shared copyright to the publication.
    • You have not submitted this article or a section of this article to other journals.

The Journal editor reserves the right to make editorial changes related to the appropriate style, grammar, and length of the manuscript.

    Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

    1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
    2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
    3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
    4. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
    5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelinesàabove.
    6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Reviewàhave been followed.
    7.
